The sky is large...and soft.

Larger light sources create soft shadows. If you're wanting the softest light possible, move your subject into 'open shade' with a clear view of the sky. Because the sky is so large, the shadows will be VERY subtle. The result is a very 'soft' light - which works great for portraits!
